Casa África joins the charitable initiative of EuroPhotoBrik

16/12/2013

Casa África participates in the EuroPhotoBrik charitable initiative, a project that has photographs as its guiding thread, bringing together different cultural activities with altruistic vocation. This time, the experience is structured around the photographic exhibition Tbabu, by Alfonso Elvira and Jesús Hermana, which opened last Friday in the institution's exhibition halls. The programme for Friday at Casa Africa also included a debating table on European solidarity and an Afro dj session by mr.Kangrejo (a taste of jazz). EuroPhotoBrik will return to Casa África on Tuesday morning, the 17th, with a lecture and a panel discussion, this time around the deconstruction of the African colonial stereotype. At both seminars,  attendees are asked to donate milk cartons.

PhotoBrik (PHBK) is a format that combines lectures with renowned photographers and charitable donations to institutions such as the Food Bank. This has already been carried out in places like the Atlantic Centre of Modern Art, through the EnfocArte project of the Popular University of Las Palmas belonging to the Town Council of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, and the Department of Education and Cultural Action from the CAAM. The previous PHBK cycles concluded with the participation of 3,000 people and a donation of 5000 milk cartons, an amount that we hope to exceed in this third cycle. People that took part in the initiative, which seeks to raise awareness of the needs of others through culture, were photography professionals such as Pierre Gonnord, Sara Yun, Javier Vallhonrat, Teresa Correa, Nacho Gonzalez or Tato Gonçalves. EuroPhotoBrik (EUROPHBK) is an extension of this project, sponsored by Europe Direct, the Town Council of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, the Port Foundation and Casa Africa. The need arises to create synergies and expand, and in a European context, approaching our neighbouring continent Africa using image and reflection.
