Talleres Enseñar África 2017

Teaching Africa is a project developed through collaboration between Casa África, the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (ULPGC) and the Government of the Canary Islands, with support from Binter, the Ramón Areces Foundation, the University Foundation of Las Palmas (FULP) and the University Centre for International Development Co-operation (CUCID) as well as the Cheikh Anta Diop Universityin Dakar (Senegal).

It is an educational initiative arising from the evidence of the scant knowledge Spanish adolescents have about Africa, after the completion of previous studies on the perceptions of secondary school pupils about Africa and the African presence in textbooks.

In order to alleviate this deficiency, this project is creating the Teaching Africa Teaching Unit for secondary school students, which seeks to present a plural and diverse Africa that, without hiding the problems, emphasizes the country’s positive progress.

In order to guide teachers interested in discussing African themes in their classes, these workshops are organized each year in which ULPGC teachers and the project directors Ignacio Nadal and Ezequiel Guerra tour the islands advising on the best way to approach each unit so that the work with the young people is as efficient as possible.

The dates of the workshops for this year are as shown below. The times and locations will be confirmed once the organisers know which teachers have signed-up to each workshop:

  • 17/10 in Gran Canaria
  • 24/10 in Tenerife
  • 26/10 in Fuerteventura
  • 2/11 in Lanzarote
  • 9/11 in La Palma
  • 23/11 in La Gomera
  • 30/11 in El Hierro

Every year, the work carried out by students during this project (murals, photographs, drawings, comics, texts, audio-visual materials, etc.) forms the annual exhibition Casa África shows in its rooms. This year, the display can be visited until 29 December.
