'Cinematographies of Africa' arrive at the Ronda International Film Festival

29/11/2010

Casa África is participating in the 1st Ronda International Film Festival, which will take place from November 27th through December 3rd with the slogan of Political Films for the 21st Century. The festival of Málaga includes the presentation of Cinematographies of Africa. A Meeting with its Protagonists, a work of reference written by Guadalupe Arensburg and edited by Casa África this year. The presentation, for which the author was present, took place this morning at the Santo Domingo Convent. Arensburg´s work has also been presented at the Madrid Book Fair and at the International African Literature Expo, in Puerto de la Cruz (Tenerife).

Cinematographies of Africa falls under Casa África´s line of work related to publications. It´s based on a series of interviews by its author with various African producers, also included in a DVD included with the book, who create a portrait of the variety and the passion of the film that is conceived, produced and filmed in Africa.

Films are one of Casa África´s areas of focus, and the organisation is associated to festivals of reference about African cinema, such as the Tarifa African Film Festival (FCAT), MiradasDoc of Tenerife, and FESPACO, the African festival of reference about audiovisual materials and that is held every two years in Uagadugú. In addition, Casa África sponsors the Cinenómada programme, which focuses on the dissemination of African cinematographies in Spain and Latin America through a film collection that includes nearly 600 productions with Spanish subtitles, in collaboration with the Al-Tarab NGO and the FCAT.

Casa África sponsors Cinenómada because it has the same objective as Al-Tarab of making African cinema visible to as many Spanish audiences as possible and of brining Africa closer to Spain.

Cinenómada makes available to various entities a large selection of films from past editions of the FCAT, subtitled in Spanish, which is to date the only offering of this dimension and genre that exists in Spain and that guarantees African producers an income, which although modest, is often the only one they receive.

It targets associations, municipalities, regional governments, universities, cultural centres, film libraries, museums and any type of organisation or institution that is interested in promoting African cinema. Cinenómada distributes films throughout the year that would otherwise remain only in specialised festivals.
