Abasse Ndione of Senegal brings his black literature to León and Salamanca

06/10/2010

The Senegalese black literature writer, Abasse Ndione, will lead a conference, by the hand of Casa África and its Letras Africanas (African Letters) programme, in the Magna Room of the Anaya Palace at the Universidad de Salamanca on the 14th of October at 7:00 pm. The African author will also participate in the 2nd International Conference on Criminal Fiction by the hand of Casa África and accompanied by the writer Antonio Lozano, on the 15th of October at 1:15 pm in the Magna Room of the Philosophy and Literature Faculty at the Universidad de León. With these two conferences and as part of Letras Africanas (African Letters), Abasse Ndione takes the reins from Achmat Dangor (South Africa), who participated during the month of September in the SILA of Puerto de la Cruz and in Letras Africanas (African Letters) at the Universidad de Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.

Ndione first appeared in the Spanish editorial market with Ramata, a novel that describes the tragic story of the woman whom the book is named after, who experiences genital mutilation and falls in love with the man who rapes her. Ablation, violence and corruption are central topics of this book, which the author presented in Getafe Negro two years ago. He has also published Mbeke mi, a story about illegal immigration between Africa and Spain.

The father of seven children, Abasse Ndione writes his stories in pen, describing Senegal´s scars and especially focusing on the sins of the powerful.

Casa África considers culture as a way of understanding one another, and also as a way of generating wealth and employment and contributing towards the development of the African continent. Literature is one of the key pieces in Casa África´s strategy, and the foundation that supports its efforts in this field includes the Letras Africanas (African Letters) programme, support for the International African Literature Expo, its own publications as well as co-editions, the Casa África Reading Club, the Casa África Media Library, and the Casa África literature awards.
