Africa House hosts a photographic exhibition on the work of the World Food Programme.

07/05/2013

Casa África hosts from today until the 2nd August a photographic exhibition with the title WFP in action, which showcases the work of the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) in different parts of the world in which it operates. The exhibition occupies Casa África's Sahel Hall, and can be seen for free from Monday to Friday from 10.00 am to 6.30 pm, together with another exhibition at the exhibition halls of the public diplomacy's institution: África.es.

The opening of the exhibition coincided with the presence at Casa África, yesterday afternoon, of members of the Global Meeting of the Network Users of the United Nations Humanitarian Response United Centres (UNHRDs), held over these days in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, in the Puerto de La Luz and Las Palmas.

The World Food Programme (WFP) is the world's largest humanitarian aid organisation in the world which fights against global hunger. During emergencies that occur throughout the world, WFP takes food to where it is needed to save the lives of victims of natural disasters, wars, famines or civil conflicts.

Since its arrival in the capital of Gran Canaria, Casa Africa has collaborated with the agency, temporarily giving over an office at its headquarters until the facilities that it will occupy in the Puerto de la Luz and Las Palmas are completed. The implementation of the WFP in the Canary Islands, together with the logistics headquarters of the International Red Cross, also in  the Gran Canaria port has strengthened the international role of the Archipelago as a logistics platform to the neighbouring continent: "Our unequivocal support to WFP is included in our line of work to promote and assist in the strategy of making the Canary Islands the ideal logistics, humanitarian, economic and political base to make it a  strategic link between Europe, America and West Africa," stated Santiago Martinez-Caro, Casa África's general director.
