Senegalese music and the Canary Islands timple come together to celebrate Africa Day

22/05/2014

The multinational band Nayaband and the timple player German Lopez will star, with a fusion of African and Canary Islands rhythms, in the great musical event of Africa Vive, an initiative that is co-organised by Casa Africa and Binter in order to celebrate Africa Day on 25th May. Africa Vive concert will be held tomorrow, starting at 10.00 pm in the Santa Catalina Park. Previously, at 8.30 p.m. those interested in Cape Verdean cachupa or sardine meatballs from Equatorial Guinea will be able enjoy an African gastronomic journey in the Elder Building, enlivened by a session by the African DJ Fran Muñoz.

Nayaband has been consolidating itself through live performances through most of the national territory during the last ten years. Although from Gran Canaria, the band consists of musicians from different origins (Senegal, the Canary Islands, Venezuela) and has a released a self-edited first album, Globalization, which sold out its run. Currently they are still working on their commitment to African rhythms which are articulated in a contemporary manner.

Germán López was born in Gran Canaria and when he was five years old he began to study the timple with Jose Antonio Ramos. At the age of seven he entered the Conservatory of Music in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, where he was taught the piano and music theory specialities, acquiring a Higher degree in the latter in 2001. His passion for music has made him a new virtuoso of the "camellito" sound,  this is what those from the Canary Islands affectionately call his timple, and his generous nature has led him to share his experience in classrooms, as a teacher, although someone like him never stops learning.
