Casa África announces the third edition of its short story contest

23/04/2015

Casa África's Media Library celebrates World Book Day by launching the third edition of its competition of short stories, Purorrelato This initiative, begun in 2013, has resulted in the publication of the winning texts of its  first and second edition, accompanied -in both cases- by fifty texts that took part in the contest and half a dozen short stories written by African and Spanish writers. Among the invited authors are the Sami Tchak, Berbel, Justo Bolekia, Cristina R. Court, Vamba Sherif, Teresa Iturriaga Osa, Boubacar Boris Diop, Angeles Jurado, Patrice Nganag, Manuel Rodriguez or Maria Jesus Alvarado. It is a competition that aims to promote literary creation to encourage us to feel and think about Africa and continue to show us the different realities that will bring us nearer to the continent, far from those stereotypes that for so long have marked it.

As in previous editions, the contest is open to anyone over 18 years of age, with a maximum of three short stories per author. The subject matter is free, although the short stories should have some link to Africa: the story can take place inside or outside the continent and its degree of connection with Africa can vary from just a detail to the whole part of it. The texts should also be original, unpublished and should not have won a prize or be pending a decision in other competitions or contests. The participants must guarantee that there are no rights from third parties on the short stories presented and they will be liable for any claims that may arise due to this.

They are allowed in Spanish, English, French or Portuguese, with a maximum of 1400 characters (not words) including spaces and excluding the title. Participating texts in this competition can only be submitted through this online form and until 1st July 2015.

The winning short story will receive a prize of 500 euros. The second and third prizes will be for gift vouchers of 100 euros sponsored by Librería Canaima to use on their online shop. The prize winners will also receive a lot with publications published as part of the,   Casa África's Literature Collection.

The jury made up from writers and experts, will establish a list of the 50 best texts that will join those sent by renowned writers, some of whom have participated in the Casa África's Literature Collection and Casa África's African Letters programme, so that they can all form part of a new digital publication.
