Today marks 365 days since the death of Nelson Mandela

05/12/2014

South Africa recalled him with a peal of sirens, horns and bells this morning at 8 a.m. Canary Islands time, followed by three minutes of silence. Cyril Ramaphosa, vice-president of the country, presided over the official events of the anniversary at the government headquarters, the Union Buildings in Pretoria: a series of speeches and a massive floral wreath. In South Africa and worldwide, the hashtag #RememberMandela serves to pay tribute and remember him a year after his disappearance. Internet is filled with his quotes and pictures, marking 67 years of dedication to the struggle for human rights.

In Casa África we also want to join the celebration of this anniversary. We recover the hashtag that we pit on the day of his death, #SiempreMandela, and the special dedicated to him at that moment to share its content on social networks. There you can go over the Storify from the time of his death, knowing what happens globally on this date and how his figure is celebrated in the global village that is the Internet. You can again enjoy articles from the journalist José Naranjo on different human and political aspects of the leader of South Africa's transition to democracy. You can remember his words, music  which somehow link to his struggle and even discover the bibliographic content related to his legacy in Casa África's Media Library.

Nelson Mandela is heritage of Humanity, our heritage. So we want to celebrate and remember the day a year after his death.
