This Most Rev. Tutu, born in Klerksdorp, Transvaal (South Africa) on 07 October 1931, is a pacifist cleric who earned international fame during the 1980s as a result of his opposition to apartheid.
Tutu was the first black South African to be elected and ordained Anglican Archbishop of Cape Town (South Africa), and then Primate of the Church of the Province of Southern Africa (now the Anglican Church of Southern Africa).
He received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1984, and in 2010, coinciding with his 79th birthday, announced that he would retire from political life so he could focus more on his family and make way for new leaders, although he continues to fight for human rights through the The Elders group, which he created together with Nelson Mandela.
Tutu is generally credited with coining the term Rainbow Nation as a metaphor for post-apartheid South Africa (in 1994, with the ANC´s victory). The expression has since entered mainstream consciousness to describe South Africa's ethnic diversity.
