24/04/2017

Today, their Majesties the King and Queen of Spain visited the logistics base of the United Nations World Food Program (WFP) in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria for the first time, during their official visit to the Canary Islands to learn about projects linked to the social and economic development of the islands.

Their Majesties Don Felipe and Doña Letizia, together with the President of the Government of the Canary Islands, Fernando Clavijo; the President of the Island Council of Gran Canaria, Antonio Morales; the Mayor of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Augusto Hidalgo; the President of the Canary Islands Parliament, Carolina Darias; the Secretary of State for Tourism and the Environment, Matilde Asián; the delegate of the Government in the Canary Islands, Mercedes Roldós; the Director General of Casa África, Luis Padrón; the Director of the WFP logistics base in Las Palmas, Pablo Yuste, and the head of the WFP office in Madrid, Antonio Salort, visited one of the two warehouses WFP has in Puerto de la Luz in Las Palmas, key for the delivery of humanitarian aid to the African continent.

The WFP logistics centre was inaugurated in 2014 thanks to financing from the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID) and significant support from the Ministry of Development through State Ports. Since its opening, it has become a cornerstone of the international community’s mechanisms for emergency preparedness and rapid response and has been responsible for the management of more than 355,000 metric tons of food.
