Casa África and the CAAM present “El iris de Lucy / The iris of Lucy”

28/01/2017

The Atlantic Centre of Modern Art (CAAM) and Casa África present the exhibition El iris de Lucy, which is displayed simultaneously at both institutions until 5 June in the CAAM and until 26 May at Casa África.

This international exhibition project, curated by Orlando Britto Jinorio, reaches the capital of Gran Canaria after its exhibition in 2016 at MUSAC in León and in the Museum of Contemporary Art in Rochechuart, France. Its production in the CAAM has the support of JTI.

El iris de Lucy shows different spheres of African contemporary creation through a selection of 25 artists from Algeria, Benin, Democratic Republic of Congo, Egypt, Ethiopia, Gabon, Kenya, Malawi, Morocco, Nigeria, Senegal, South Africa, Tunisia and Zimbabwe, including two artists from the Canary Islands.

The works collected in the exhibition allow us to understand the complexities and varied facets of the diverse African cultural space. They are works that address the gender issue, raised from different perspectives, and issues related to identity, race, the body, the relationship with the land and traditions, the environment, history, colonial and postcolonial issues, migration and borders, memory, the experience of exile or the tradition and the present.
