Presentación en Casa África de la Asociación de Mujeres Africanas en Canarias (AMAC)

Africa has demonstrated a strong commitment to promoting gender equality and empowering women. Almost every African country has ratified the Convention on the Elimination of all forms of Discrimination against Women, and more than half have already ratified the African Union Protocol on the Rights of Women in Africa. Other milestones include the African Union’s declaration of 2010-2020 as the African Women’s Decade.

Women in the diaspora are also aware of the role their gender plays in the world. A role which, in the past, has been played silently. But the feminist currents of recent years have awakened shouts of “Enough now!” which must have been heard even by those who still insist on ignoring the work and labour of 50% of humanity.

There’s much truth in the oft-repeated saying that there’s “strength in numbers”, so African women living in the Canary Islands have decided to come together under the acronym AMAC (Association of African Women in the Canary Islands). They honour Casa África by choosing it to host the launch of their association, as it also hosted the launch of FAAC (Federation of African Associations of the Canary Islands) many years ago.

The idea of creating an association of African women was born out of their need to speak for themselves, to tell their stories. After all, they are the people best able to express who they are, what they need and what they can achieve and contribute to society.

The objectives of the Association of African Women in the Canary Islands can be summarised in the following points:

  • Integrating the immigrant population in the Canary Islands, in particular African women
  • Raising awareness of African women and their cultures, their strengths, weaknesses and challenges
  • Educating and training the immigrant population in the Canary Islands, in particular African women
  • International cooperation to support the development of the most disadvantaged countries
  • Sorority, i.e. women who share common goals working together in solidarity

If you want to be at the launch of the AMAC, the event is taking place on 15 March 2019 at 7pm in our Nelson Mandela Auditorium.
