Picasso y la escultura africana. Los orígenes de 'Las señoritas de Avignon'

Tenerife Espacio de las Artes, the Málaga Fundación Pablo Picasso Museo Casa Natal (Picasso Foundation Museum Natal House) and the City Government of Málaga have organised, with the collaboration of Casa África and JTI, the exhibit titled Picasso and African sculpture. The origin of Las de señoritas de Avignón (The Young Ladies of Avignon).

This exhibit presents Pablo Picasso´s Notebook number 7 of preparatory drawings for Las señoritas de Avignon (The Young Ladies of Avignon), along with twenty ancient African art pieces generously granted by the Tribal Ready Collection, which are close in the formal similarity and ethnic origin to those by Picasso himself. 

This notebook belongs to the Málaga Fundación Pablo Picasso Museo Casa Natal (Picasso Foundation Museum Natal House) and consists of an academic sketchbook with eighty four pencil and Chinese ink drawings made between May and June of 1907.

This preparatory album for the pioneer Cubism work--the only one in public and private Spanish collections--is characterised by the dynamism of the feminine sketches and the quick strokes used to make them.

The exposition will be at the TEA (Avda. de San Sebastián, 8, Tenerife) from April 29 to August 22, 2010.
