Casa África welcomes the participants at the International Forum on Governance, Social Movements and Citizen Participation

Casa África recibe a los participantes del Foro Internacional Gobernanza, Movimientos Sociales y Participación Ciudadana

The forum, which featured a panel discission organised and moderated by journalist José Naranjo, Canary Islands Communication Prize winner, brought together activists from Senegal, Mauritania, Democratic Republic of Congo, Mali and Burkina Faso. These countries are represented by Aminetou Ely, Fatouma Harber, Nebon Babou, Nicole Ndongala and Mamadou Dia who come from citizen activist movements such as Doniglob, Balai Citoyen, Karibú and Hahatay Sonrisas de Gandiol. They are accompanied by Jorge Pérez Artiles, director of Citizen Participation of the Island Council of Gran Canaria, and Juan Montero Gómez, a philosopher and teacher who specialises in the study and understanding of Africa.

The objective of this Forum is to allow an exchange between the Canary Islands and Africa that sets a precedent and opens new channels of understanding between different societies, promoting the active involvement of citizens, both as individuals and as part of collective associations, as a key element for citizen-based governance. During the Forum, round tables were held and a declaration was drafted that includes the main demands of the representatives of the different social movements. The meeting was aimed at citizens and its objective was to promote the impact that organised citizenship can have on public policies and governments.
