Third MACbioIDi International Workshop for scientists and researchers from Africa, America and Europe

III Workshop Internacional MACbioIDi para científicos e investigadores de África, América y Europa

The closing ceremony of the Third International MACbioIDi Workshop which has been held over the past few days in Gran Canaria will take place today, Tuesday 29 January, at 1:00 pm in Casa África. Participants will include key experts and organisers: the director general of Casa África, Luis Padrón; the professor and coordinator of the MACbioIDi Project, Juan Ruiz-Alzola; the director of Harvard Medical School; the vice-rector of Internationalisation of the University of La Laguna, Carmen Rubio; the vice-rector of Internationalisation and Cooperation of the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Richard Clouet; and the director of the Canary Islands Health Service, Conrado Domínguez.

International co-operation, technology development and knowledge transfer in the field of health summarises the strategic focus of this workshop, the second day of which was held today with presentations given by the expert Michael Halle - Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Harvard Medical School - USA, Andras Lasso - Associate Director (Engineering) - Perklab - Canada, and Babacar Diao - Ecole Militaire de Santé Dakar - Senegal. Eleven hospital and university directors from Senegal, Mauritania, Cape Verde and Canada - strategic countries in the development of the MACbioIDi project - took part in these sessions, along with medical and engineering professionals. The aim was to carry out training activities and share knowledge about designing research projects, with the development of sustainable technology applied to medical science as a central theme.

The MACbioIDi project, directed by Juan Ruiz Alzola (ULPGC professor in Signalling and Communications Theory), organised this working meeting between the project’s international researchers and their African partners to share information about advances in medical imaging technology and its future applications. Training workshops and group work took place during the Workshop, considering the progress of the project and the implementation of the 3DSlicer technology. This is how MACbioIdi is establishing itself as an international hub for technology transfer attended by some of the best experts in the world.

The third MACbioIDi International Workshop is a meeting point for scientific, academic, health and business entities from the Canary Islands and the rest of Spain, Madeira, the Azores, Cape Verde, Senegal, Mozambique, Mauritania, the USA and Europe. These countries are involved in the development and implementation of free medical software technology, mainly for use in their own health systems.

The beneficiaries of the project are the ULPGC (as co-ordinator), ULL, IAC, ITC, M-ITI (Madeira), and Hospital do Divino Espirito Santo (Azores). The event is held in collaboration with the Canary Islands Health Service (through the Department of Health), Proexca (from the Department of Economy, Industry, Commerce and Knowledge of the Government of the Canary Islands), Casa África and the Elder Museum of Science and Technology of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.
