The objective of this collection is to support the edition of integrated texts in the African Studies Library of Edicions Bellaterra, led by Albert Roca. Africa´s cultural heritage will be disseminated throughout Spain with these titles in order to bring Spanish audiences closer to the legacy of the African society´s great thinkers. The Chronicle of Guinea

Nationalism and Culture

Amilcar Cabral Just as narrated in the prologue of this work, Amilcar Cabral was the most famous leader of all those who challenged the Portuguese colonial power. Yes there were other names, some like Eduardo Mondlane or Samora Machel in Mozambique; or Agostinho Neto and Mario de Andrade in Angola, to name his most significant contemporaries, but Amílcar Cabral's importance does not only lie in his political projection, where he is a leader in the military erosion of Portuguese colonialism, but also on the intellectual plane, from which now come works such as this, which Casa Africa now translates and edits.

The Chronicle of Guinea The Chronicle of Guinea

E. Aznar / D.Corbella / A.Tejera. This text serves to get to know about Portuguese expansion in the South Atlantic. Its author, the court chronicler Gomes Eannes de Zurara, used the detailed reports sent to the court by the expeditionaries in his writing, which is why his information can be considered as "first hand." The work is focused of the character of Prince Enrique and in the travels that were undertaken under his aegis until 1453, which cover from the historic journey from Cape Boujdour until arriving at the Gambia River region. Apart from the discovery itself, the story provides important details about the populations found by the sailors (Azanegas, Guineans and Canarians) their habitats, clothing, weapons, food, etc. Read excerpt - Buy

Black nations and culture

Black nations and culture

Cheikh Anta Diop
At the time of its publication, this work's message sounded like a huge expletive: black Egyptians? Black-African parentage from the "Greek miracle"? The scandal increased, and became greater, in the anti-colonial emancipation atmosphere of the time. Diop's ideas lit up intellectual African circles, firstly those of the Francophones and later especially those of the Afro-Americans. But his ideas are still valid, together with the international deafness, which surely makes up one of the greatest sins, which are not just moral but utilitarian, of the Western Academic World. Just as Diop imagined, Black nations and culture was a starting point not the end destination.

Africa Must Unite

Historia del África Negra. De los orígenes a las independencias (History of Black Africa. From Their Origins to the Independences)

Joseph Ki-Zerbo
This contemporary classic is not only relevant, but also essential. The original work was a sort of essay of what would later be the General History of Africa, a reference project in which Ki-Zerbo participated as a member of the International Scientific Committee and the director of the first volume. Joseph Ki-Zerbo belonged to a generation of elders who, on the path to independence, reviewed the continent´s history south of the Sahara. That history had been ignored and even denied by the West for a long time, as reminded by the author himself when quoting Hegel in this regard. The colonial historiography would begin to fill that void, but attributing any substantial changes to the exterior.

Africa Must Unite

Africa Must Unite

Kwame Nkrumah
The title of this book has become a slogan repeated thousands of times for the Pan-Africanism that followed the African independences. In 1963, when the Organisation of African Unity was created, Nkrumah published this book that best summarised his Pan-Africanist ideology as a call, almost a plea, to the set of new African nations. Nkrumah´s words to the founding assembly of the OAU continue to be true: "If we are able to build in Africa an example of a united continent with common policies and objectives, then we will have made the best contribution possible to the peace desired by all men and women. And Africans are aware of this."
