Photo exhibition: "Building networks. 10 years closer"

From 21 September 2017 to 5 January 2018 in Casa África
Exposición "Dakar, una mirada"

Fight. Fashion. The rhythm of life. These are the fundamental axes of the interconnected viewpoint constructed by the Senegalese photographer Mamadou Gomis and the Spanish documentary maker Pere Ortín about Dakar, the Senegalese capital, that chaos beneath a harmonious, attractive and cruel appearance; of slow traffic and fast walking, where you don’t need to dream, you just need to open your eyes.

The exhibition Dakar, a look is the result of a decade of joint work whose richness arises from the combination of points of view: that of the local citizen-narrator (Gomis) and that of the foreigner fascinated by the life flowing through urban Africa with the idea of asking questions, learning, trying to understand (or not) the attractive complexity of a mega city (Ortín). From this dialogue comes an exhibition full of nuances, which mixes artistic, documentary and journalistic points of view. Photographs and videos that invite us to observe attentively, to look carefully, to recognize that beauty is always in the eye of the beholder, and also of the storyteller.

In Dakar today, one savours the bitter aftertaste of that dressing of nostalgia which is common in the older people who demand the return of a city that can never exist again. The megalopolis has grown to become a tempestuous ocean that moves in an underground stream of love and hate. Dakar may drive one to despair, but it always entraps, with its joys and misfortunes, its pleasures and torments; with that unique everyday life force present in the good times and the bad. If you travel around - without being intimidated by the clichéd vision of a Western tourist guide - you’ll discover a unique city that enjoys rich and multiple identities; vibrant and lively, complex, contradictory and fruitful. Dakar, an imposing city which is as fascinating and contradictory as life itself.

The opening ceremony will take place in Casa África next Thursday 21 September. At 7:30 p.m., the two protagonists, Mamadou Gomis and Pere Ortín, will offer a free talk, and at 8:30 p.m., the official opening of the exhibition spaces will begin.

The exhibition Dakar, a look has been organized and produced by Casa África and Altaïr Magazine with the collaboration of Binter. It can be visited from Monday to Friday, from 8.30 a.m. to 6.30 p.m., at the headquarters of Casa África. Free admission.
